Kosovo Seizes Hundreds of ASICs After Bitcoin Mining Ban

Kosovo, a partially recognized state in Southeastern Europe, has confiscated 272 different ASICs that were used for Bitcoin mining, according to a police statement released on Saturday.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of an individual convicted of licensed mining.

Equipment seized by the authorities consumes the same amount of electricity as 500 homes.

Kosovo announced a blanket ban on cryptocurrency mining last week due to a crippling energy crisis that the partially acknowledged country had to face this winter. It was imposed on the basis of the recommendations of a technical committee.

Several small foreclosures took place earlier this week.

Mining has taken place mainly in the municipalities of northern Kosovo, in which the Serbs are in the majority.

Kosovo officially declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
